Okay, you remember me telling you the other day about my little month-old chick trying to crow? Well, every morning since then I've carried the video camera down to the coop but got there too late to catch him in the act. This morning I had to go down while it was still dark enough the auto door hadn't opened yet. (I needed to separate the turkeys into a coop so I can give them probiotics and put them back on gamebird feed since they've been eating the lower protein food with the rest of the flock for a past couple of weeks. In order to separate them since they still are not handleable, I had to grab them off the roost before the door opened). Anyway, luckily the camera was still in my jacket pocket. Cyrus started crowing when I entered the coop, and the little chick responded. It was a full-on one-for-one, so I flipped out the camera, hit the record button as soon as Cyrus got done with his latest crow and caught this. There is no picture because it was so dark the camera couldn't pick up anything. But listen anyway:
That's great thanks for sharing!

Lime makes the soil uninhabitable for the protozoa that causes blackhead.

Oh come on, HEChicken, just a nice little Sunday drive away! Snicker, snicker. I would be tempted to go for those turkeys myself, except I just bought a bunch of ducks! This is a case of Danzizing for sure, but more of a classic case rather than a "finest"?
wink.png
Denial, denial, denial. I've had people asking me to raise some ducks, so now I am but the beauty of it is that they have already been raised 2 weeks worth out of the 6! That, plus the buy one, get one free, was my rationalization. We'll see. Khaki Campbells are really good layers and Pekins are great meat ducks so it's a good mix. That is, if you really enjoy ducks and I really do. They are so easy to take care of compared to the chickens and so much healthier. They have been great at the pond because they eat those thousands of tiny snails and keep it mosquito larvae free. They truly eat far less than the chickens because they are foraging so much. I haven't had to Oxine the pond at all since the heat has left. It seems to have reached a healthy balance. The water is even clear in the shallow areas, which is awesome! Of course, we are still keeping it filled so it's getting lots of oxygenated water every few days.

Tookie is just not doing well and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she'll make it overnight. Her symptoms are kind of all over the place. I first noticed she wasn't quite so active, day before yesterday but decided it was just my paranoia talking. But today, she was laying on the ground sleeping and sleeping. So that's what caught my attention. Then I noticed her coloring wasn't right. Her head was looking more gray and white. I had to go to her and she usually comes to me. Then when she did get up she seemed lethargic. I started her on antibiotics because her nose was running on one side. Then I noticed she had yellow diarrhea. That's when I tried the cayenne pepper in some egg for her. She perked right up and began eating her regular food and drinking her antibiotic water. The kids and I stayed with her and she learned quickly that all she had to do was point her beak in the direction of food or water and we would hold it up for her so she didn't have to bend over. We got her filled up for overnight and I'm hoping she'll be okay in the morning. I can get Fish Zole at the pet store, which is the same specific antibiotic used to treat Blackhead, but I'll continue with the other antibiotic also since she has a runny nose too. She seemed much weaker than normal which worries me terribly. I wish I had kept some of that fish zole on hand for just in case. I wish I had run to the pet store the minute I saw she wasn't feeling well but I didn't really know what to think at first. I don't know that's what's wrong with her but it may be and I don't want to leave any stones unturned. Of course, if she's feeling much better with just the other antibiotic, then maybe it has nothing to do with Blackhead. I'm still going to get some of that stuff so I'll have it here.
Thanks for the information! I learn so much on this site!
Well, I had an interesting evening. I had a pretty bad car wreck around 5pm yesterday. I was driving down the highway after taking the kids to the pumpkin patch and we were headed home. I was on 103rd St (highway). My brother in law was driving behind me with his family (we went to the pumpkin patch together). I was behind a big truck (I was driving my 2008 minivan). Well, the truck in front of me slows down and using NO turn signals starts to turn off the highway to our right onto a dirt road. I had slowed down because I was behind him and when he got onto the dirt road, I was about to speed up again to go on, and all of a sudden, he wheels around and flips a U turn and shoots across right in front of me! I T-boned his truck, I had no time to stop, and then did a "Dukes of Hazzard" fly into a ditch on the opposite side nearly hitting a telephone pole, but I was stretched over the air bags trying to see out my window so I could swing the car back down into the ditch as it was trying to pop up out of the ditch. I can't even believe I had the sense to do that!! I'm a little in awe of my own reflexes on driving and trying to steer around an inflated airbag.

I got the van stopped, I had to kick my door out, and then pulled all 3 of my kids out. I thought my car was on fire, because the smoke was so bad and I was choking and coughing. Got the kids out and then started to pull out the carseats when my Brother in law ran up and started helping me get everything out of the van. I kept telling him the car was on fire, and kept telling me "no it's not--it's the airbags". Lots more to the story-- especially about the idiot I hit trying to lie to the Sherrif that he didnt make a U turn-- he said he was going straight and I was trying to pass him on the highway??, but anyway EMS got there and took me to the hospital, I thought i had broke my wrist and my legs and neck hurt, and I have burns on my arms. A few x-rays later, nothing is broken, but they did wrap up my wrist since the bruising goes all the way around and told me not to lift anything. My spine is fine, but I got whiplash. Of course. I got a cut on my right thigh, I don't even know how. I hit my left knee and it's bruised and sore, and the burns on my forearms from the airbags. I'm kind of a mess, but alive and the kids were fine!

The van... oh, the poor van. The airbags broke the windshield-- looks like two heads went thru it on the passenger and the drivers side, but it was just the airbags that caused the perfect spiral "head" shape breaks on either side. The van doors-- none of them want to open. I must have been on an adrenaline high because I was able to rip them open just fine and get the kids out. I had shut the doors and when the Fire got there-- they couldn't open the doors again! It took them a while to get the sliders open again so they could lay me down flat in the back for a while until EMS got there. I probably could have lift the entire van at that point! LOL It was so odd, things just went flying in the van-- I think I got hit with something flying from the back. But the upside is that the kids were all in their harnesses and they fared MUCH better than I did. They didn't go to the hospital, but EMS did check them out. I didn't see any of it, they had me all strapped down by then.

Anyway, I'm really tired and they have me kind of drugged up. I'm home now again, so I'm fine, but I'll be walking a bit slower for a couple of days, ink. I didn't mean to ignore everyone, but just can't remember everything I read.
REST, REST, REST! Losts of clear liquids to help with the soreness!
So thankful you and your children are ok! Good think the officers can look at marks on the road and the impact and know that the truck was U turn! The most important part is you will be okay! LOTS of clear liquids!
I had a little scare this morning. Each morning I walk the perimeters of our property with the dogs. I enjoy the time walking, and it keeps me in tune with what is happening on the property. I usually pick up a few hedge apples to throw to my neighbor's horses, and if any trash has blown in, it gives me a chance to see it and pick it up. This morning, while on the far side, I came across a big pile of reddish feathers - like what you'd find on a Production Red. Big feathers - not from some little flying, wild bird. Although my flock is mostly contained, I've been letting them out for the last hour of each day and had the horrible thought that perhaps last night one of them didn't make it back in before the auto door closed. I don't particularly like my red hen - she's a broody raised hen so isn't friendly to me and is a bully to the rest of the flock. But - she is one of the few still laying since so many are molting, so I was upset at the thought of losing one of my precious few layers. Speeding up a little, I made a beeline for the coop and was pleased to see my red hen even from a distance. I did a head count and everyone is accounted for, so sadly, this chicken must be one that belonged to one of my neighbors that keeps chickens.
YIKES!!! Glad it wasn't your bird but knowing the preditor is there on your property munching birds is creepy! I love my auto pop doors.

I just skimmed...

Hawkeye, that must have been terrifying! I'm so glad everyone is okay. I can't believe he tried to lie his way out of it being his fault.

I can't remember everything I read, but I know I laughed about the neighbors thinking 'dad' was out of his mind holding the goat's horns while 'mom' milked it XD

That little chick crowing was funny, too :)

Can't remember if I mentioned last week that I had lost one of my Barred Rock pullets to something respiratory. Well, the next day I lost my SLW roo, too. I got everyone's water medicated with the Duramycin and everyone seems to be doing better now. Now more sneezing.

I think that's all I can think of right now. Have a great day, all.

Turkeys are pretty fragile and subject to upper respiratory problems and when they are young they chill easily too. I would definitely try to come up with a way to separate your flocks. If your neighbor is in the practice of buying sick birds and letting them near his healthy birds who knows what your flock is being exposed to. I am really strict about even having visitors to our farm. When I sell birds I meet people off my property and when new birds come in they are quarantined for 2-3 weeks before being introduced to the flock. I just can't afford the heartache of losing my birds because I brought in an illness.
WISE advice!!

Say what now? What are Lemax items?

HeChicken, items made by lemax are decorative items. Have you ever seen these little Christmas villages with houses, people, different store fronts trees all kinds of different things. Usually they are all early type 1900's style. I have a large set, I love it, but I have not set it up in a couple of years.
Tha'ts right checoukan. I have been a dealer for several years. It made me wonder if Ivy told you about my sea van full of Christmas stuff. She is one of the few people who have ever seen it. I am guessing I have near 400 houses and thousands of people, trees, animations and other scenery things. I haven't set mine up since I bought this place. I had room in the big house but no place to put them here. But I order a couple thousand dollars worth every year. I really need to sell several of my old houses. I have many other brands from when I first started collecting. Some I will keep and others I need to just eliminate.
I always feel like Gulliver when he was the Giant in Lilliput when I set up the villages.
I also have Thanksgiving, Halloween, Easter and The Dept56 Wizard of OZ. I have an extensive Liberty Falls village and about 4 scales of the Christmas stuff. And several trains to go with them.
I got the pen divided where the Bantam Polish were. I still need to divide the house. It will be more work. When it is all said and done the Orpingtons will be moved there. I still have two young polish roos in there and I should take them out and try seeding that ground in the pen. I wish I had some grass seed.
My neighbors cut soy beans yesterday so I am going to trek out in the pasture and look for spills. The chipmonks love them.

You're welcome Kansas Prairie, now that I think about it I've never seen anyone be cranky with each other on this thread and I'm thankful for that too. I don't like it when people get that way, we're all friends and it hurts when friends don't get along even when you're not one of the ones in the middle of it. I'm only on this thread on BYC, so I can't speak for other threads.

Maidenwolf, I'm so sorry you are dealing with illness too.

HEChicken, my dad can come anytime to come check it out but he's instructing us and I don't think the problem is obvious yet. There were a couple of outlets that had mysteriously quit working and now they're all of a sudden working again. Something strange is going on, I double checked all smoke detectors because it scares me. OMGOSH!!! Your little rooster crowing is SOOOO FUNNY!!! What's up with that? He's taking his job seriously already.

That's funny, Danz. I think you're right about the DH thing, but I can still growl a little. GRRRR. I so don't want to put in the new furnace. I wanted to wait until something big broke and it really needed to be replaced. This seems like such a little break, it's only a matter of fixing this tiny little piece of plastic and getting a good seal and it seems so wasteful to just switch them out for something so small. We have the fireplace in the living room and I have 2 space heaters, the kitchen only gets cold at night so as long as it doesn't get too cold I still have a little time. I'm just glad it's not 20 below.

I wasn't following this part too well, I didn't know about springs and push in holes. We just went around checking to see that all of the outlets are 120. I will definitely take a few of the outlets that have been misbehaving apart and check them out.

Oh Lizzy! Those are amazing pics!!!!!

OMGOSH Hawkeye!!!! That's so scary, I'm so glad you will be okay and your kids were unharmed. I can't even imagine. I'm sure the sherriff could tell the driver wasn't telling the truth. What on earth was he thinking? Isn't it amazing what you can do when you just have to? Take it easy and get well soon.

I have 7 chicks hatched so far, I only helped the first one that had the taped shell. There are a few more in there already in pipped/zipping still. There are many eggs in there doing nothing though. It's kinda funny, but I put a thermometer in the brooder because I wanted to keep it extra warm for the one I removed from the incubator to help. I had the thermometer standing up against the side just leaning a bit. It's had been running in the low 90s and I was okay with that. Well, the chick knocked it down and would you believe that laying against the bottom of the brooder/tub it's exactly 99.5 degrees? I try to hard to keep the incubator at that perfect temp and here this is 99.5 by chance.

I need to get busy, I'm supposed to be typing my dh's papers and they're sooooooo boring I can't hardly make myself do it. Wish me luck.

I don't remember who posted the link to a de-icer but I've been looking at those as I want to build a nipple waterer system and this is a better price than both Orcheln's and Amazon, and... they have free shipping for orders over $60. Yay!

Anyway, I'm really tired and they have me kind of drugged up. I'm home now again, so I'm fine, but I'll be walking a bit slower for a couple of days, I think. I didn't mean to ignore everyone, but just can't remember everything I read.
I'm so glad you and the kids are okay!!!
These are beautiful shots! You must have a nice camera. I love mine, I have a really nice one, too. This looks like it should be in National Geographic. :)
Thank you! Mine is just a point-and-shoot camera with a nice 20x optical zoom on it. I got it after I graduated from K-State. I saved up my graduation money from high school, juco (junior college), and KSU and used it to get the camera after I got married in 2008. I love it! I like taking pictures and editing them (the ones of the chipmunk are unedited), but I don't have the knowledge/creativity to know what makes a good picture. I have to SEE it first (I guess I'm too much of an engineer
hmm.png
), but typically I can see it in front of me and realize that it would PROBABLY make a good picture. These pictures were both taken using the "auto" feature which many good photographers really dislike, but I seem to have pretty good luck with it, which is good because I'm still learning the other features. :) I took pictures at my neighbor's daughter's wedding just because I like taking pictures. Afterwards, I edited them and gave them to the neighbors and to the new bride and groom. Apparently, they really liked the pictures, which made me feel good.

Here's one of the pictures I took. The wedding was at the family farm. The stone building in the background belongs to the bride's brother and his family. I heard reports of them spending $600+ in ONE MONTH to water the lawn to keep it green in this drought for the wedding.

Here's a picture to show how far back I was... There was one person that kept getting in all of my pictures... You guessed it - the flower girl with the broken arm was in a good portion of the pictures I took.

Here's a picture I took after the wedding. This is the bride's father and the bride's niece. He put himself here, I just took pictures of him. He was also in mid-conversation, so getting a picture of him smiling and NOT talking was a little bit of a trick.

Lizzy, I agree, those are terrific pictures. We loved the ground squirrels up in Yellowstone too - very entertaining to watch. When my kids were little I took them on a camping trip. We were camped in the Rocky Mountains, in a tent, and built a small fire so we could make hot dogs and s'mores. A chipmunk jumped up on the table and stole DS's hotdog - we saw it happen. I always thought it funny but if you mention it to him even today, he will tell you how mad he still is at that chipmunk - and he was only 5 years old at the time. I don't know what's funnier - that the chipmunk stole the hot dog or that DS continues to wager this war on all chipmunks because of it.
Thank you! That story of the chipmunk is rather funny! Wasn't the hot dog as big as the chipmunk?
Lizzy those are great pictures. And that would be a chipmunk. Ground squirrels don't have face stripes.
Thank you! And thanks for the clarification of the difference between the two. I know we've got ground squirrels here in NW KS, but they never hold still long enough for me to get a good look at them. :)
Oh Lizzy! Those are amazing pics!!!!!
Thank you!!!
