So I figured out how to catch rats around the chicken coop.

Buy one of these:

It's called a VICTOR Electric Rat Trap.

Did it catch a rat for me?

No, but I finally broke down and ordered one from Amazon last night for $40 and last night I caught a rat in my snap trap!
All it took was ordering this spendy little bugger!

All kidding aside, I'm going to try the Victor.
It got great reviews and I know there's more than one rat out there and with my new baby chicks, I'd like to get rid of them.
I've seen a pair and unless I got mom, I'm sure there's a nest of babies.

I'll report back.
In the meantime you can read the reviews here:

We used electric traps for mice and they do work! Of course, we don't really use them outside, because we have four barn cats, an indoor/outdoor cat, and a porch cat.

Good luck getting rid of the rats!

Yeah, I'm definitely going to try the electric traps too.
I just came in from checking on the chooks and was standing in the yard and looked down and there was this beautiful, sleek-coated RAT looking up at me! Good Lord, he looked fat and healthy!

I've picked up all the food. Those girls are not going to graze anymore. I'm going to feed them, and pick it up.

What about the baby chicks.
Do they need food left out all day or can I feed them morning and night?

Chicks do best with food available all the time during the day, but they don't need it during the night. Careful, as rats do eat chicks.

I'm so excited!
Our dog just killed the other big rat!
As far as I know there are only two.
If they have a nest somewhere, hopefully the little buggers will starve!

He's getting STEAK for dinner!

He looks like a lab but we had a DNA test done (he's a rescue pup) and he had a large percentage of rat terrier in him.
You wouldn't know it to look at him. He looks like a lab, but I'll be ******, the instinct must have come out!
HOORAY!

Our dogs love going after rodents! They dig for voles, shrews and moles.
