I'm wondering if these can be converted to have cup waterers? I'd actually like to provide two nipples and two cups to see which they take to, especially since I do have one pullet with a mild case of cross-beak.

Don’t bother , the chance of it dripping is great .We has that and the mold developed in a few days . I don’t like those it’s like drinking from a straw , something like this is so much nicer, they can get a nice big gulp of fresh clean water .

Good luck with whatever you choose

Your birds don't poop in it? The type we have now (they are only 5 weeks) is similar but smaller and they constantly manage to poop in the water.

You have to elevate a fount so the rim is the height of the chickens' backs.

In general the horizontal nipples and the cups are similar dimensions but the thread count, pitch and taper are different. But with a good pipe dope compound you can probably make it work.
I like the cups but they don't work in winter.

I watched our stand under those nipples forever it seemed, water is so important for birds as important as food . It just bothered me so I sold my nipple buckets ..

I also give mine a cheap cat litter box full of water , they jump in and drink .If your worried about the heat you could add electrolytes to their water, just to give them a boost, I add a small waterer with that on hot days , you’d think I gave them kool-aid !! They all want some .

Funny, I gave them electrolytes yesterday and they went nuts!

I would never give up my bucket horizontal nipple setup it is the cleanest easiest
way to go tried cups none worked or had the runs on.. vertical dripped ... birds at
1 month can operate them trust an old lady on this please you will not regret it..
could not find my photo of my bucket I pulled the one off Amazon complete .. you can do that or buy a dozen nipples pay for plastic buckets drill screw nipples in like 3 or 4 per bucket.. I set them less than half way up older girls put then on a brick add cottage cheese containers of frozen water in hot weather
