This would work for you too. When it turns cold you put plastic or plexi over the windows to keep the cold out. You can drill itty bitty holes in the sides and roof and put in some of that expanding foam insulation.
Biggest problem is ventilation. I've drilled some 1 1/2 inch holes just below the roof line all the way around. I'm also talking a bunch of old political signs that I gathered up last year to mount in the corners where the sides join to fill in the gap and stop drafts.

What I am doing is building a frame for the window. nail the wire to the frame. then screw the frame to the house on the inside. I will be leaving one window with shutters without wire but will be bolted from the outside. This is where I will put my nestboxes.
I love it. I would expand the run though to an area not covered. Birds need sunlight as we do. It can still be covered with chicken wire to keep predators out.
well Ive done all I can on mine for now...rains were coming, didnt get to paint the Roof but well later and outline the door and window frames with a yellow or something.
But here it is as you can see we used Fan covers for the window and door and on the side for the big door...DH put a wooden door....we are not carpenters but we do recycle...lol
we still need to anchor some roost...but weather was coming in...so for now, this is it until I can get back to it. The wood to the side is to hold the tarp up so it doesnt fill up with rain water. Still need to figure out my coverage ontop and on the back for sunset going down.
