Put the ladybugs in your garden, they love aphids. Or chickens might like them too, not sure about that. At any rate, ladybugs are as good as the straw, for different reasons. Straw also eventually makes good compost but it takes a long time to break down, longer than hay actually. And I would prefer pine shavings over straw for bedding too. Straw tends to get wet and yucky faster and harder to clean up.
