Converting the shed, pics at posts 16 and 20

Sounds like a wonderful plan. I converted my wooden shed (retails for $2,000) into a coop

My family & friends thought (still do) that I was crazy to do it! I bought a plastic garden shed for my tools, snowblower, and push-mower. I have never regreted my decision either. Check out my BYC page and see my coop

we also started with 10 hen . We now have 30 laying hens 4 roos and 50 chicks( did I say I have bators too). very addictive! hicken math will get you every time

Okay - so I chickened out. I hired my contractor (the one who built the Faraday run for me) to help with the conversion. I'll post pics as we go.

So far, I've got a nice big opening framed in and covered with hardware cloth and a door, so there'll be lots of ventilation in summer. (I've also got vents to add up at the roofline.)

We decided to cover the floor with more hardware cloth and the edges of the coop will have 2x2 (ripped 2x4s) along all the walls to hold it, to keep out rats. Last night the girls stayed in the new coop. And one of the girls is in the nesting box now. (Pics *after* she's done - don't wanna disturb laying.)

So, it still needs a proper roost (to replace the plastic shelves I made them sleep on last night) and a proper nesting box; a tunnel to the Faraday run, and then I get to put down the woodchips. Pics soon.

It's a 5x10' metal garden shed. Was here when we moved in.

Here's the edging along the floor/wall. The floor will be covered entirely with hardware cloth, then this edging nailed down to retain it and keep out rats.

That's going to be a nice coop when it's all done. Do you have a window across from the door for a cross breeze? The more ventilation the better, especially in a hot climate. And can I say that I am SO jealous of your run? It's HUGE!!

Here's the insides of the mostly-finished coop. Still need to add a pop-door at some point and "nicer" nests for laying. But that's for later.

Moving clockwise around the inside:

Vents over the door (and on the opposite side of the shed as well).

New Roost, and floor covered with hardware cloth, and edged with 2x2s.

Opposite the roost is the new window (plexiglass) and a redwood tunnel to the run.
