Hello, so I have kind of a different story than the normal "How to convince my parents to let me get chickens". I'd actually like to adopt some older chickens. My friend here on byc has to get rid of some of her older chickens and I'd really like to take some. I have a coop design, supplies to make one, chicken feed, and the perfect place to set up a coop. The only reasoning I can come up with that might convince my parents is that they could eat slugs out of my moms garden, but I really can't think of much else. Does anybody have any other ideas? Any pros about chickens that don't include eggs??

"Raising chickens is an easy way to teach responsibility. Every kid needs to learn responsibility don't they? And isn't dogs kinda expensive and a lot more involved than chickens? So why not teach responsibility with these sweet little gals?" ;)

thanks! that's actually a really smart way to put it, I think i'll make a power point or something and i'll definitely use that reasoning.

Yep! :D

I actually learned that fact myself. I've had chickens for a long time now, and now I've been wanting a dog. When it comes to dogs, responsibility is very important. So, as far as responsibility on something like that, I've already proved myself! Now the hard part. I need to find the right dog to try to convince my parents with.

They might eat slugs(actually ducks are better for that) but chickens will tear up a garden in short order.

Is your coop design adequate for your number of birds and climate?
They probably won't know, but your birds will and it could be big trouble and expense down the road.

Are you positive that the supplies you have are enough?
Building a coop and run can be very expensive.

Sorry, parent perspective here. ;)

That's ok lol. Also my mom considered ducks but she thinks they're too messy :( and thanks for the information about them tearing up gardens, maybe I'll have to make a coop some place besides the garden. We'll only have about 3-4 chickens and it's going to be a 14 x 14.5 coop (i think that's enough room?). My dads an engineer so he helped me plan on the supplies I need and he has it all in his garage.
