Just for reference the med is 8" across & 3" tall, I have made one or two from the med. size and it worked just fine. I will add that I didn't use a standard round bulb, see the link below for what I used. I was able to get these at the dollar tree, two bulbs for 1.00

Try specialty stores that cater to home crafts. They usually stock these tins for the holidays for people to use for cookies (what a surprise!) or for gifts etc. I had trouble finding one till I went to a craft store. There are also online places to get them.

We made a cookie tin water heater for under $10. It has been working great under my 2 gallon galvanized water. I put 2 round cement blocks under it to keep it off the floor. It got into the single digits here in NW Ohio last night and the water was fine this morning. You can find the tins in resale shops,rummage sales, or better yet this time of year buy one at Target of Walmart with cookies in it. Eat the cookies, or share them with your chickens, then make your heater. This is a great invention!!

So you can put a string of christmas lights in it in place of the light socket and it will still work? I tried the light socket and it just makes me nervous with the cord just hanging out of the side of the tin. My chickens knock there waterer over all the time. I put the socket in the tin and set the 1 gallon waterer on top, then put rope around the waterer and attached to side of coop so they couldn't knock it over. I think the christmas lights would be safer because I can pull the cord outside of the coop and it won't be around water. When the drink, some water spills over the edge of the waterer and I don't want it dripping on the edge of the light socket. Not sure what to do now.

Indoor/Outdoor Christmas lights were in the ice, snow, blizzard, hurricane like winds here in East Central Indiana, so I figured why not try them because I did not like that bulb and my non mechanical expertise. Pleased to report that while hen house was 30-40 degrees inside with no auxillary heat, 3 degrees to 12 degrees with 40-50 mph winds outside, the Christmas lights(strand of 50) in the small can (for the 1 gallon) and the strand of 100 for the large can and 3 gallon plastic waterer have worked terrific! I used a drill with the thingy used to drill circles in doors for door knobs. Put can side on a cutting board/scrap board on kitchen counter. Easy, almost instant gratification! I lined that hole with sticky backed fluffy sided velcro. Happy Holidays !

I wonder if you could make one and paint it with something like stove blacking and use it for a hen house heater as well as a water heater. It might serve to make the coop just a tad bit warmer.

Buy a metal hog feeding pan at tractor supply. Put in a ceramic bulb and flip it over and put sheet metal bottom on it. It looks like the heater thats for sale.

Ok I seen this thread early this morning on Friday and seem like a good IDEA , so I ended up getting what I needed from home depot and wall e world - I ended up building 4 of these today , I try them out dry run and seem to works , My out side temps are 20*F , wind chill is close to the single numbers and my coop is about 45*f as of now .


My question is this, it seem that everyone used these type of water heater in there coop, has anyone use the outside, seems my turkeys are outdoors and don't use a coop so there food and water is outside 24 7 so I was thinking on building one for the outs side run pen for my Turkeys so that the water don't freeze up , has anyone does this if so what wattt bulb do you use in the eastern part of the usa , I in MA .very close to cape cod .


I'm asking about running them , do they work outdoor , and if so what watt bulbs do you use to keep the water from not freezing. I have a pen with turkeys that don't have or will not use a coop , so there outside all year long so the water ends up freezing , so I was thinking about using one of these cookie tin heater for under there water pans
