OK it's so simple.

Gather acorns and hammer them open. My birds LOVE them.

To save them for winter microwave them on a paper towel for 7 min.
If you want to save just the good part you can take them out of the shells.

Many wild animals eat them like candy. Turkeys do, then it should be safe for chickens. Humans can't eat them. Maybe that's what you were thinking of.

Pigs love them too, I've been told. Also, I tried one once as a kid. It tasted awful and bitter. I'm pretty sure they're not poisonous (I'm still here obviously.) I read a long time ago that you could use them for wilderness survival if you had to, and were able to choke the yucky things down.

How MUCH do acorns cost? AND where can I buy them? They don't grow here amongst the cactus and mesquite and tumbleweeds...and the occasional "Chinese Elm" tree............

FREE........like grass is free.....??????

'taight FREE here.

My Well is 500 feet deep. I hope it's deep enough to last me.

An old Scottish way of dealing with bitter acorns is to grind them and take out the "meat" and boil them in several changes of water (save resulting liquid for dyeing or leather tanning as it is rich in tannins), let the nutmeat dry and it is good to eat.

According to great-grandma, it was never regular food, only famine food.
