Here in California, it’s actually been unseasonably cool. However, I’m sure the heat will return at some point. I typically provide misters and fans on hot days, ice their water, sometimes even pour a big bag of ice cubes in the run to create a (temporary) cool spot. And they always have lots of shade. However, when I’ve tried providing water dishes to cool their feet, they go ignored. My first year I provided a baby pool with bricks for them to stand on, which they enjoyed, but it was too messy and poopy to keep going. I couldn’t keep it clean and didn’t want to tempt them to drink it. (Yuck.) Can some of you show photos or describe what types of shallow dishes your birds like for cooling their feet? I have three steel feed bowls I place around with water, but they ignore them. Maybe I should put bricks in them. Thoughts?

Mine like the shallow black rubber tubs meant for livestock feedings. They walk through them & drink out of them. My girls also like it if I run a hose for them until puddles form and then they go crazy scratching the muddy dirt.

How tall are the sides of the black tubs? I got steel ones that I thought would be the same height as feed tubs, but they only drink out of them. Maybe too slippery. Running the hose for a bit is something they would certainly enjoy!

I want to say they are 3-4” tall. I got the Tuff Stuff 2qt size. I bought them for the horses grain but they were too shallow for the slobbering old horses and the younger horse is so fat he doesn’t need any grain! So the chickens inherited the pans. Maybe like you said....the metal ones are too slippery. The rubber ones definitely wouldn’t have that problem.

Mine love their puddles so much that I run the hose about every other day for them......even when it isn’t hot.

I agree I have 2 rubber feed tubs in my cockerel pen right now. I swear they stand in it all day long. I keep telling myself to swap one out to the main coop but i haven't yet. I feel like they will only step into water if they fell the height is below their chest.

I've found this plastic toboggan to work very well.
It's too big to tip over when they stand on the sides,
and it's easily rinsed with the garden hose at the end of the day.

Have also found that huge(9x14x2) chunks of ice last all day.
Yes, they sip poopy water as the chunk melts, but they do that when it rains anyway.

Luckily I have room in the freezer to make these.
