Sunday evening I closed both doors to my shop. I thought I had closed the walk through door. The next morning I go down to find the door open and find every chick (over 40)I had hatched in the last 5 weeks dead. I am assuming that the wind that came with the rain that night blew the door open (swings In) but I do have lever handles on the door so it is remotely possible that the coon reached the handle. I lost every Black Cochin,Partridge, and Silver Penciled I had hatched this year. Fortunately most of my hens are laying except for my Blacks. So will hatch until end of August now. That night I sat up with my rifle and below is one of the coons that came running to the shop 1/2 hr after dark. I had enough light from the yard lights to shoot well. Pair of big coons showed up and neither left. Picture of the largest one follows. Never before lost more than 1 before. Won't lose any like this ever again. Different latch and lock already installed as well as self closing hinges.

Sorry for your loss; but good shooting. I killed one coon Saturday and a skunk yesterday. Personally, I set out a pair of Duke DP traps with marshmallow bait just a few yards into the woods behind the coop and leave them permanently on guard. Great thing about this set-up is it's specif-specific to coon, or use sardines instead of marshmallows and they work on possum and skunk as well. Zero chance of harming a chicken/dog/cat/deer and deadly efficient on coon. I go the bed and the two traps stay "awake" all night hunting. If the predators stay in the woods I don't bother them; when they get near my coop, they die. Good luck and good hunting.

They say coons are as smart as 5 year olds, so if a child can get into the locks on your coop, so can a raccoon.

Good plan. These chicks were in my shop. There is always a live trap near the coop so I can release the area cats and dispatch predators..

Sorry for your chick loss.

It means I show no young birds in 3 varieties at the State fair this year. My favorite show of the year. Still have plenty of other good older birds.

I know how it feels on a smaller scale. I had 3 of my chickens that were to be entered in a show by myself and my friend killed 2 nights ago :(. I tried trapping it first, but I woke this morning to an empty, closed trap. Tonight I am sittin outside with my grandpappy's old shotgun :) wish me luck!!
