Coondog and chickens

He is not quite understanding why it is ok to make them move when i ask him to but not other times.

I believe that they can learn. I however didn’t have so much luck with my husky. Granted we got her before the chickens and we did try to introduce them and let her around them while she was on a leash, but she got ahold of all 12 ducks and 6 baby chickens.

I think since they are so young you will have a great shot. They are smart dogs and will figure it out. Growing up I don’t think our dogs would have done so well. They were Redbones. And not that they couldn’t have learned, just my dad was about them killing everything. He’s not a great person though either. I have considered getting myself some Redbones but I worry about them getting the chickens I have left and when I get more ducks.

Our Rottweiler though is pretty good with the chickens. She watches them and more interested in what they are doing rather than just them. She has not been trained but it’s just her. We had NEW baby kittens, as in freshly born, that we rescued. Someone just dumped them. Anyway she was about 6 months old and every time they cried she would cry until she could see them.

Even though we trust her, I wouldn’t just let her be around them unsupervised. After what the husky did, I couldn’t trust any dog. And we did take measures but she was determined and she fought her way to them.

I think it probably makes a big difference if you already have birds when you bring them home as a puppy. And also if you are allowing them as a hunting dog to Chase and kill other prey..
Then it's probably going to be even harder for them to make a distinction between what they can chase and kill and what they can't.
I dont allow my hound to kill things. His job is to alert me to things and let me take care of them.
He did find a baby bunny recently and give it a good mauling over before i took it from him. But it wasnt bleeding so he didn't chomp it.

We’ve had Pearl now for a week. She hasn’t barked or charged the Fence since her first introduction. A very firm NO, scared the crap out of her. Now she stands very still and points. She goes with me every time I go tend to them. I’m sure at this point she would kill everyone of them if she got the chance. Patients and gate latches .

My first egg from my girls. Sounded like she was dying. Just heard another one so I ll probably have more by morning, o figure I got two grand in that egg.

No problems. Chickens are in their run. I think the dog finds them interesting.

For obvious reasons I've never tried training my dogs. Ones a Basset and the others a red bone mix. They're good about letting me know if somethings around the house or chicken coop. My chickens have predator proof coops and runs and don't free range.
