I think it probably makes a big difference if you already have birds when you bring them home as a puppy. And also if you are allowing them as a hunting dog to Chase and kill other prey..I believe that they can learn. I however didn’t have so much luck with my husky. Granted we got her before the chickens and we did try to introduce them and let her around them while she was on a leash, but she got ahold of all 12 ducks and 6 baby chickens.
I think since they are so young you will have a great shot. They are smart dogs and will figure it out. Growing up I don’t think our dogs would have done so well. They were Redbones. And not that they couldn’t have learned, just my dad was about them killing everything. He’s not a great person though either. I have considered getting myself some Redbones but I worry about them getting the chickens I have left and when I get more ducks.
Our Rottweiler though is pretty good with the chickens. She watches them and more interested in what they are doing rather than just them. She has not been trained but it’s just her. We had NEW baby kittens, as in freshly born, that we rescued. Someone just dumped them. Anyway she was about 6 months old and every time they cried she would cry until she could see them.
Even though we trust her, I wouldn’t just let her be around them unsupervised. After what the husky did, I couldn’t trust any dog. And we did take measures but she was determined and she fought her way to them.
