Good afternoon!
I am a brand new chicken owner and may have jumped in without enough research. Anyhow, we bought a prefab coop from Tractor Supply (my hubby and I are NOT handy and have very few tools). I now understand that we need to lift our coop off the ground to prevent the base from rotting - and in South Carolina that will happen quickly!
I have what I think is a very clever idea. I am thinking of building a base of cinderblocks and putting the coop on top of them. Then, I can plant marigolds or other herbs in the holes of the blocks to hopefully beautify the coop a little. I am going to try to attach a little drawing I did below that I hope will explain my concept a little better. Don't laugh at it...
My questions:
1. Is this practical?
2. How can I secure the coop to the blocks with minimal skill or tools? Some long zip ties?

I'm very pleased to see that someone else considers aesthetics to be just as important as function. Your idea if using cement blocks as a foundation is identical to mine. I used the blocks for my second coop, and I wish I had thought of it for the first one. I just used cement pavers for the support posts to sit on, and they began rotting at the bottom after a couple winters of snow sitting on them.

It was a hassle digging the pavers out of the accumulated mud and then pouring remedial footings around the posts.

Here's a tip. Plant flowers chickens don't like. I've found that no one likes Marigolds and they are so pretty, colorful, and easy to grow.

Thank you for your reply! Our yard is surrounded by chain link fences and butts right up to neighbors all around. I am hoping a pretty coop and free eggs when we have extra will soften their hearts to our chickies over time.
