my husband is taking leave next week to build my girls a coop. He wants utilitarian and I want something cute. Any ideas? I’ve been looking through articles but thought I’d ask folks who have been through it

You can have it both ways! The main thing that I concentrated on when I built my coop was to be able to easily keep it clean and also be predator proof and have good air circulation.

Well I'm more utilitarian, but some paint and trim can turn practical into cute without too much extra work, so that's one idea.

Since you mentioned browsing through the coop articles already, have any particular ones caught your eye? While you want to take into account how many chickens you have/hope to have, as well as climate considerations, you can scale some designs up and down to suit your needs.

We converted an old shed into a coop. It is far from cute and definitely more utilitarian. The pluses.....you can stand up inside and it is easy to shovel it out when cleaning.

We like those aspects so much that we are building a smaller but similar coop and run for our bantams. I can’t stress enough how nice it is to be able to stand up inside the coop. Our first coop (the one our bantams are currently in) I can walk in if I bent down some but I am always hitting my head.
