Coop building - not as easy as it looks

congrats on finishing your coop catdaddy66 ... I'll look for the pics. Do you have the run done too? I haven't even started and I'm wondering how am I going to be able to trench a run - awww tired just thinking about it (ha ha ha).

after a couple attempts at building small coops from salvage lumber we broke down and are building a 12 x 16 raised floor, insulated, electrical service. All from new material...O Myyyy took the day off work yesterday. Set posts, framed up floor, compressor broke (No framing nailer now) set flooring and framed up three walls with a hammer (I hate the hammer, Love the framing nailer) I'm tired and sunburned. It was 75 yesterday (friday) woke up to ran changed to snow. Now at 10 pm we have 3 inches of snow and still falling. We don't even want to discuss the cost

My husband nearly got arrested because of hardware cloth.

Resource officer at school questioned me repeatedly about the horrible scratches up and down my arms and legs. (I tripped over the dog and then over the wire. )

It wasn't until I finally convince him by bring him pictures and a piece of wire to show him that the marks on my arms were the exact spacing of the 1/2 inch wire that he finally relized I was just a clutz!

(my husband hurt me?! They would never find his body!! LOL)

Interesting posts! Here's what I've done. Found an old shed on Craig's List, bought it and now have to transport it 110 miles. Since it is 11 x 15, it is too wide to be legal on the highway so have to get two permits, one for the city where it is, and one for the state. But I don't think I could buy all the materials for what I paid for the shed. One of my sons and I will move it with help on at the origin with loading and I have tractor and jacks for unloading. Might have to rent a small crane on this end. But here is my question (finally). Since I can alter the thing any which way and plan on having a run that can be alternated to any one of three sides, what suggestions do y'all have for a remodel. It is insulated and is wired for electricity and doesn't leak. It was built in the 1940's so it's a real antique of sorts but not as old as I am!

Well, I'm 8 months pregnant... top that.

Really my husband and my dad are building it, I'm just doing little things to help where I can. This is the biggest construction project my husband has done. My dad, however, has done many projects MUCH larger than this so he knew what he was getting into. I did paint 90% of our 8x8 coop yesterday, by myself though. My husband did the peaks so I wouldn't have to be that high up on the ladder.

KBlaix - did you get as much paint on YOU as the coop, like I did (still finding it in my hair - LOL) ?


NMbirds - WOW that shed looks great, the delivery should be very interesting ... you will have to take pictures of the traveling I've got to see that. How much did you pay for that shed? I bet you did save a lot - the price of lumber is very high these days - yikes.

Rained all day on Sunday and it snowed all day today and suppose to snow tomorrow too ... so our coop building is on hold until the next decent day.

After building our house, you would think building a coop would be a breeze. We had a plastic shed, which we sold and keep the floor. Had some scrap wood and bought the rest. I am now building a small coop , all from free wood.
