Best to use large metal washers, I had to order mine from McMaster Carr to get 3/4 OD and 3/16 ID for use with deck screws because you can't find them in most hardware stores.
I've also read of people using bottle caps or drilled pennies as washers.

Just an Update. : Since they refused to use the roost during the night i decided to make ladders and a new second story to the inside of the coop. So today I...

Made a second story with 2 ladders on the way up. I deepened my litter stop on the nest box and lined it with hay (they are 15-16 weeks so getting closer). I also added a little lip inside the trap door so the silkie has another footing on her way up. After they adjust we'll see how they like this new set up and if they will actually use any of it. (the way this all looked before is in the start of the thread)
