Hi, I am going to get 8 chicks in May, I need a coop, only thing I can find is the cheap TS type ones or a Carolina Coop way overbuilt (but great !) and I cannot afford
Wanting to build one, my yard is secure and where I live the temperature doesn't wander too far from 70 deg F, at least not for long.
Any plans out there or should I just Hack one out, would like it to look nice
Thanks

You don't need a coop. Just a roost and a predator-proof part of a run to enclose the roost. Or predator proofing the whole run would be better. And a way to keep the feeder dry.

Depending on how often it rains, you might want a roof over the roost, too. And a bit of one or two walls at the roost level.

Maybe something like this https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/finally-complete-any-suggestions.1502154/#post-25132359

Where, in general, are you located? Climate matters, especially with housing.

The easiest, most cost-effective build is a hoop coop. Next easiest is a shed conversion.

For 8 birds you'll want at least 4x8 with at least 8 square feet of ventilation -- preferably located above the birds' heads when they're sitting on their roost. If you're in a warm climate you might want an open air coop -- essentially a big wire box with a 3-sided shelter at one end.

Likely needs a roof and a couple walls no matter how much it might rain.

Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

If you have the TIME you should build. You'll save a lot of money but you'll get the pride of building. Keep in mind with 8 chickens you will want about 16-24SF of coop space (the low side may be ok for you since you have a lot of free-range space).

But that means you are looking at a 4x4 or better a 4x6 coop. Note that 4' size as it will help you conserve wood since most dimensional lumber and siding is based on a 4' measure.

There are a TON of options out there and a huge coop section on here with endless plans. I'd suggest finding one you like the looks of and building to your size. You'll be surprised also that most handy-men and tool-loving men or women will be more than happy to lend a hand for a coop build. It is easy in the grand scheme, fun and a quick (thus rewarding) build.

Also, I would agree with Dobie- if you have an existing shed room somewhere or overhang it will save you needing a roof. My latest coop is completely under an existing overhang.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the reply's, I have a fairly small backyard but room for a 6' X12' coop/run, the remainder of the yard is vegetable garden and fruit trees . I will only keep 4 to 6 of the birds and give the rest away, I ordered more in case of shipping loss.
My shed has no overhang but I love that one on your building, Im thinking something like that with its own roof.

Another question, Will I be able to let them free range in my garden or will they fly away, the other day I saw 2 chickens on my neighbors roof . or will they eat all my veggies.

They may fly away, or at least wander into neighbors yards.
When you first get them keep them confined to the coop and run for at least a week to 'home' them to stay there.

or will they eat all my veggies.
Yes, they will destroy most vegetation, either by eating it or scratching it up.
