coop clean up

This is how I handled this same problem....wet, muddy areas.....I put an ad on Craigs list explaining that I wanted just some old hay for my chicken coops and their runs. I had two persons reply. The one I was interested in has hay bales that have been sitting for months and are dusty and dirty. They'll be perfect for the chicken yards and coops. I keep cleaner hay or shavings for the nests, though. The woman is charging me $2/bale. When the weather's dry, I also add grass clippings, leaves, fireplace ashes....they love to roll around in the ashes and peck through the leaves and grass clippings.

My run is dirt. I rake the leaves and keep it cleaned out of everything. As Scooter says every time I've down at coop I have my pooper picker upper and plastic bucket and I do just that. Pickup every pile I can find. I don't want hay or anything else in the run. Chichens might like to scratch around it but I don't care to find those little supprises they leave for my boots. Mine range all day and even there I pickup what I find and it all goes into the garden. It's just about time to turn in all under now. Gotta get the onions in the ground.
