Typo I guess. The p and the l are close together on a keyboard.
Should have been pine shavings.
And welcome to BYC, Chicksterfan!

Sounds like a great flock! Are your hens mature or pullets? Any roos?

I have 10 mature hens (5 BR's, 3 RSL's and 2 white leghorns). One of my RSL's is the senior coop mama at age 5 & 1/2.
She doesn't lay anymore but she keeps law & order in the coop and field.
We rescued her from certain death 3 years ago. Poor girl had been grotesquely de-beaked along with her 3 sisters whom have since passed on. She's a wonderful hen!

I have 12 meaties that will be ready for processing in a few weeks.

Also have 12 week olds. One white leghorn cockerel named Rocky.
6 white leghorns, 4 SLW's, 6 BO's, 4 BSL's, 3 Dixie Rainbows (may use for meat, not sure yet).

They are all hens at 3 months old. We had two roosters but got rid of them.

My wife and I have agreed inchs the red sex links have slowed down past their prime (2-3 years from my research) that we will give them to a good home and replace with buff and wydonetts.

What's pdz?

And oh my gosh, ridgerunner, 3-4 years for a full litter change!? That's amazing! What is a favourable climate? And what about when you go out to the coop and it's been raining? Do you have a separate pair of boots to prevent transfer of moisture to the bedding?

I am thinking about building a poop pan under my roost any ideas on what works best?
Some use a tarp, some use a piece of plywood covered with vinyl for easy cleaning-- even saw one lady whom used a sheet of aluminum shaped in a V pattern... if you do that just remember to cover the raw edges of aluminum with duct tape of something of that nature. Sharp egdes= cuts and bumblefoot infection.

Thanks Clucker I have a roll of coil stock and a break to bend it with. I could make it and do a fold&tuck on the edges to keep them from cutting themselves was thinking about making it to scrap clean with the droppings falling into a bucket as I clean it. Just not sure if I'm over thinking it
