My Coop
My Coop
So I've decided to build my final coop. I'd like to have Chickens and ducks, maybe quail. Anyways, I wanna make it 12 x 8 with 3 4x8 separate coops(Or maybe 2 6x8s Not sure yet but either options is better then my current situation. I've never built something that big and I'm trying to estimate how many materials I would need 2x4 wise. How many studs does a 12 ft wide wall need? I wanna have the back wall and the sides fully secured with plywood and i want it to be very stable. Hurricane Barry did a number on my current coop but shes still standing and i'm proud of that. So I just need to know if there's any construction people around here. I can estimate everything else but i wanna be correct on the framing. (Dont judge my horrible drawing and sketchup skills I tried!) Thanks for reading!

Me again. Have you scanned through these for ideas yet?

Basic framing is either 16” on center or 24” on center. I recommend going to Lowe’s or Home Depot and pick out a cheap basic framing book.
Being that your in Red Stick, you will want A LOT of ventilation in your coop with 1/2” hardware cloth for security, not chicken wire. Design your coop so it is easy for you to access and maintain as well as safe and comfortable for your birds. Here is a good thread to look at also:

X2!!!

I would go with something more along the lines of this:

But... I would make those solid back walls have about half that can open up for full venting... but be closed for hurricanes. I think the front could stay open.... depending on how sheltered your area is....or make plywood sheets that you can screw onto the screened area for a big blow.
