Thanks for all the replies. I've been out there considering what I can possibly do to extend the coop space...

For now, I may just pick up a couple of large dog runs and hook them together....or I could just assemble a larger pen. But for the time being I think they coop is adequate for pullets. I have time to work with, I mean.

And I live on the CA coast...it's nice and mild about 90% of the year. Hot days are few and far between (90degrees F and above). It doesn't snow here and the early winter mornings hardly ever dip below freezing. Most of the time it's nice and balmy: Average temps in my area 65-80 F spring and summer 50-65 F autumn and winter.

On rainy days I have a large patio covering about a third of the yard...if they have enough sense to stay out of the rain.

It's kind of fun learning as I go along. And as far as the free ranging mess they will leave behind -- I plan on hosing it down every so often during the day. I'm a stay at home mom at the moment, so I have the time.

Flexibility is key (and it helps to have a husband who has onstruction experience and is more than willing to humor my sudden chicken interest).


Please do keep on with the advice, critisizm...or anything else. I want my girls to be happy, productive egg-layers.

Believe me, I can eat me some eggs.
