Love the huge pallet coop! I don't think DH will go for doing one that big though, since he's already thinking that my 8x8 coop is bigger than we need. I think he's just afraid I will add more chickens, which of course I will!
We currently have 5 chickens, and 3 chicks in the brooder. At least one of the big chickens is going away, as we know for sure that there are 2 roos out there, possibly 3.
I would like to end up with somewhere from 10-15 ultimately. They do free range all day, as we live on 50 acres, with another 60 acres around us before there are any neighbors. They have plenty of covered areas, including their two favorites, the wood shed and under the porches.
The windows will be screened in, with a flip up framed in plexiglass covering, since I want them to have plenty of light even in the crappy weather. They will be fairly high up on the walls. I found that Home Depot has 11x14 pieces of plexiglass for like $3, so that's where that measurement came from. I will be putting one on each side.
We are putting a metal roof on, and my thought was that on the two sides that we mostly don't have wind on, I would leave about a 6 inch gap, covered with hardware cloth. There will be roof overhang, and I don't think there should be a breeze or rain blowing in issue.
I may not be describing the siding and inside walls well. We will have whole pallets making up the walls, then will use torn apart pallets to wall in the inside. These boards will be as close together as we can make them without overlapping. and will be installed horizontally. Then, on the outside walls, we will be using the cedar boards. We would be using a very small nail for spacing purposes. I guess we could just butt them up against each other, with no nail spacing, we just don't want to overlap them at all.
Thanks for the help!
