Hi,
We started our first coop yesterday. It will be raise off the ground about 2 1/2 feet and is 4'x6'.

In reading everyones helpful tips I know I want to be able to reach all areas inside the coop for cleaning. Our original plan was to put the larger people door (pop door??) on the 4' end because that is what I see in all of the pictures of coops. But while standing at that end and trying to visualize cleaning the opposite side it seems it would be difficult.

My question is can I put the door on the 6' side, in the middle so it would be easier to reach everything. I can't figure out why this might not be OK but in all the pics of coops I have looked at I have never seen it so was afraid there might be a good reason for that!

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Dawn

I want to be able to reach all areas inside the coop for cleaning.

I have one on both sides for that very reason! So far I am glad I did - altho one of the chicks jumped out when I opened the side that isn't inside the run - - that is the only downside as far as I can see at this point (chicks have only been in the coop for about a month) - - just gotta make sure they are all out the pop door and it is closed before you spend anytime with it open!

Here is a pic of the coop with the larger one open - - there is also one centered below the window inside the run - hard to see but it is just a bit larger than the window - I am not a very big person and I can actually get into the coop via the large one on the end.......just don't wear black if you plan on doing that!!!

A door on the 6' side is possible, but there could be structural issues if not done properly. My coop is a raised type and 4'x 6', with the people door on the 4' side. I use a garden hoe for clean up and waterer and feeder are right there for attention also.

My coop is 4' by 4', with one wall the opens up completely. I have a picture on my BYC page if you want to take a look. I can reach the back of the coop without getting into it, but just barely. I have sand on the floor, and a removeable boot tray under the roost that I pull out and dump the contents into the compost every morning.

I've often wondered how easy it is to clean when there's only a small door on the side of the coop for access.
