Coop Drainage- a data table of mine showing why it's not good to have matted bedding

I live in California, but we haven't had much rain this year. The soil varies in many locations in my yard, either: rocky, soft, light, harder than concrete, clay like material. Very hard to plant stuff in certain places!

Yup...that sounds about right !
I had to go down there and care for my 94 yo grandmother...until her death in 2006................then had to work hard to escape back here !

I'm sorry. The heat is brutal there!

If you have any more question about the table, just ask!

I am sticking with pea gravel..............as far as I can see, it is the best for pen runs...stable to walk on (rather than slippery clay/poop) and helps drain immensely !
It is a booger to pack into the pens via 5-gallon buckets but oh so worth it.
What did you finally use as run material ?
Oh, and I just had a great hatch of Maria Hall BBS JGs hatch !!! Gorgeous babies !

OK back to work for me~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I use the deep litter method; mix up fresh shavings with the old shavings, it slowly composts!

Good luck with your babies!

I also prefer a very absorbent bedding called "Dry Den" for chickens. It is shaped in pellets but when dampened it softens and as the chickens scratch it can dry up and be fluffy. It doesn't produce much dust either, in my experience.
