Coop floor? PLEASE HELP

I think you'll find the majority of us byc'ers use pine shavings. I do. I have dropping boards and to be honest, I haven't change my shavings out for many months. I just fluff up the old and add a little new once and a while, works great.

SAND. I got to say it's the best. It drains quickly, extremely easy to clean: just shake it up and maybe pull out some of the clumps.
This is my first coop but I am so pleased with it. There is not smell and the chickens can dust bath anywhere they like. If it's in the shade the sand is very cool and the chooks like bury themselves in it.
Negatives...if the wind is able to blow the sand about you'll have a mess, sand in the sun get hots (but not in shade!) and if you have cats they may use it.

I use shavings too. I have a small coop with 5 chickens. My coop has a floor to it so all I do is places the shavings under their perches. I do not cover the whole floor. I clean my coop every week and a bag of shavings last me about 2 months or so. I was told hay is not good because of lice. You should use shavings in their boxes also.
