Hi there!

I'm new to this site & new to raising chickens! My girls are 2-weeks old today. We'll be starting to build our coop this coming week but wanted to clarify about the coop floor and run. Should it be pine shavings inside the coop or hay? I've heard to use river sand in the run. What do you all suggest?

Thanks!

Either pine shavings or hay is fine in the coop. I use both. I prefer hay for the nests as the hens seems to like making a "bowl" with it. A lot of people are very happy with sand in the run; it drains well and is easy enough to clean.

! Great to have you aboard! Flockwatcher gave you good advice. I opt for shavings at first (warmer) and hay when they a little older (cheaper). Good luck to you!

Thanks for the great information! I'm assuming they'll be able to pick bugs from under the sand in the run, right? I'm such a newbie so will have a lot of questions
