COOP FLOOR

I plan to use a heavy galvanized wire for the floor of my coop so the droppings land on the ground below (2-3 feet down, as the coop will be up on legs. I'll put shavings there to collect it and rake it out every week or two. Do any of you experts see any reason that won't work?

it's not good to have chickens stand on wire.

I agree, wire isn't very good to have chickens constantly standing on it. Try putting something over the wir or something. But I don't think this will work...

I also agree with the others. Your chickens will not do well in the long on a wire floor. They could wind up having all kinds of feet and leg problems. I would put in a rubber mat or something like that.

Hmmm. I was just considering what I wanted to put on my floor. I was thinking of putting wire under the roosts and having wood or linoleum everywhere else. I wanted the dropping to fall out onto the ground....my coop also is elevated 2 feet. (Didn't mean to hi-jack the thread!)

not only is the wire (really) bad for your chickens' feet, there's no guarantee that the poop will fall through the wire, depending on the size of the holes and the size of your hens. i have a hen who camps out in a rabbit cage at night with hay on the floor. when she's on the roost, her poops fall onto the wire at the bottom in the back instead of on the hay. only a hose with a high-power nozzle will get that stuff out of the wire. it just sits on top.

I would say that that would work, except that the insects might be able to get to the nests/birds easier. Also, cold may be a huge factor, depending on where you live.
