I use pine shavings for the floor, 6" minimum.

I remove the shavings no more than once a year, only adding occasionally when needed.

My wood floor looks the same as it did when I introduced the birds 7 years ago.

My experience has been that moisture from the droppings never reach the floor.

The coop does get dusty...

Hmm...I did it differently and put the glass board down on the bottom / deck of the coop and then when I built the walls and set them up on top of the edges of the deck...so the glass board is under the walls around the edges? Does that make sense?

I am turning an old shed into a coop. It already has a plywood floor and I afraid cement would me too heavy.

No, I meant, does anyone have any thoughts about cement floors? I just got rid of my sand floor, then my gray/old leaves floor. Neither worked well for me, as I have back fusions and it was hard to deal with. I need something easier.

Our coop was made using an existing shed. The floor is OSB, we painted it with DeckOver.
It's a thick, textured paint for decks. We bought it at Home Depot for our pool deck several years ago and had some left over. It's held up well on the deck but we've only had it down a couple of months in the coop. There's deep wood shavings in the coop so the moisture really doesn't get to the floor.

I don't think you would have any issues with concrete...cold is the first thought that comes to mind but I see you are in Central TX so I think they might enjoy the cool floor! Thoughts about possibly sealing the concrete?

I hear you on the back fusions...L4-S1 for me. I am so lucky I am still able to do about everything I want but building this coop took me out a few days with the up and down off the shop floor framing the walls.

My coop is on an old cracked concrete floor, and after a few years of swearing as I did the spring deep litter cleanout, I put rubber stall mats over it. Much easier to shove out the bedding, and not as damp. If it was a good solid concrete floor, the mats would have been unnecessary. Mary

Our first coop has a cement floor and I didn't have any problem with it. I put down wood pellets and then covered that with wood shaving. It smelled so good. The wood pellets help absorb any water that got in and dried quickly. We were given a 10x16 shed with OSB flooring for our new coop. We painted it with Blackjack 57 and it felt like a million splinters when you ran your hand over it. Yes, it's moisture proofed now but we worried about their feet so we covered it with cheap vinyl flooring and then covered that with wood shaving. That was in January and so far it's good. I guess we could have just put the wood shavings over the OSB with Blackjack but was so worried about their feet. I would love to put the wood pellets in the new coop instead of the shavings. They smell so good and are so absorbent. BTW, the chickens don't eat them.

I use a large heavy-duty tarp on top my plywood floor. Put my litter on top of it. Depending on how much litter, size of coop, you can sometimes just drag the tarp out the door to clean.

Ive been thinking of using tarp as well. How long have you used this type of flooring for? Any problems or issues? Does it hold up to deep litter?
