Coop from old shed?

If I did this right, at the bottom of this is a link to my recent post to the new coop pic thread. We did a similar project to yours. Thankfully we had some rough sawn lumber and metal roofing around the farm that helped keep costs reasonable. We are really happy with the result (and the chickens seem happy!). I think you have a great start and it'll work out great! I look forward to your updates!

I think it's a great start! we have a metal building that was half carport and half storage building/well house for our water well. we took the front section of the carport half and framed it in to be our coop. The other side is still storage/well house. I can still pull my truck in to the carport in bad weather and our girls have a much bigger home than they had before. It already had 3 walls just an open front so It was pretty easy to frame in one wall. Can't wait to see what yall do!

Denwendairy, your shed is the same size as ours. We will need to add a window as well. The original door was actually two doors that opened up so my father-in-law could get his riding lawnmower in. The doors were off and in terrible shape, although the lock was still on the latch! We only have six brown leghorns, so this will be a "castle" for them. I love your chicken tunnel and the landscaping you have done.

Thanks farmgirl7! As you can see from the before pic, we also had door renos to do. I couldn't bring myself to crouch down to get in every time! We put plexiglass in the door and a window in the back. The window made a huge difference, both for light and ventilation.
I was surprised at how much space all of the stuff (feeder, roosts, waterer, nesting boxes etc) took up inside. We only have 10 pullets. There is still lots of room for them but it definitely looked less spacious after all of that went in. We have extremely cold winters so I anticipate that they will be in there a lot this winter!

We are slow, but making progress. The posts are up for the run and the new floor is in. The walls we are replacing will go up tomorrow. I'll take pictures in the morning and later tomorrow evening. I'm excited that it is coming together! I'm going to put in 2 windows with hardware cloth stapled to the inside. A young man is working with my husband and that is really helping to move things along. I'll be looking for floor covering and run covering! The fence will be about 5 1/2 feet tall and I need part of the covering to be for shade and part for sun. I'll be making a covered grass garden for them with winter wheat for the cooler months. And if I get with it quickly, before they EAT all the grass, they will have a never-ending supply of bermuda grass!

We've had 4+ inches of rain, which is unusual for Oklahoma in July! The pictures were taken later in the day and the sky was overcast, but you can sort of get an idea of what we are doing. DH is just not a carpenter, so he got a couple of guys in that are putting this thing together in record time. The rain has slowed us down the last two days and the guys will be back Friday afternoon.




This last one you can see one end of the garden to the left and get an idea of the size of the yard. The floor is down on the inside, but we lack a window and door, plus the roof repair. He put the pop door on the outside, but it's no big deal...I can move it inside very easily.

Haven't posted in awhile, but we are nearly done with the coop! We moved them Tuesday afternoon, which was quite a job, especially since the last one got loose, went through a fence into the pasture. The dog chased her back and she came through the same place and we caught her. We should have started earlier in the day. By the time we got them all in the run, it was nearly dark and they hadn't had time to check out the coop. The began to bed down near the pop door, so hubby went and got the brooder light and we clipped it to the rafters, then very carefully picked them up and put them in the coop. I imagine they slept on the floor that night, but discovered the roost on Wednesday and have been sleeping happily there ever since! My 20" wide poop deck is working great. I put vinyl on the floor and the poop deck, then put PDZ on the poop deck and and a whole bale of pine chips on the floor. I cleaned the poop deck for the first time today and it worked like a charm! Of course the chickens all came in and watched what I was doing. We haven't got the mess outside cleaned up yet, so I haven't taken pics of the building....but I went and sat in the run and took pictures of the chickens enjoying their new digs. The run is 12' X 16'. I will be building a "garden spot" for them soon, since hubby has promised me some wheat seed to plant for winter. They are really getting used to me and will all run out of the coop to see me when they hear my voice.

BTW, that's Floppy and Spike.....bet you can tell which one is which! The ladies are 20+ weeks and haven't started laying yet, but I'm checking every day now. The nesting boxes are set up under the poop board. I also have three large covered tubs under the poop board for storage. This is one way to solve the storage problem. The roost and poop board are both 8 ft long, so there is plenty of room for all 6 birds. I keep the pine shaving bales in the carport. I used porch and floor paint for both inside and out. I got the "mauve pink" for the inside at half-price since someone had brought it back. It looks much better on the walls than it would on a floor, LOL! Pictures of the coop will be coming soon.
