The humble beginnings of my new coop, built from reclaimed lumber from part of a shed that I tore down, and pallets I got for free. Wish me luck on this construction adventure. Any advise is welcome.

If you are building it raised off the ground not a walk in.....make sure you can reach every corner even the ones underneath.
Chickens are good at putting eggs in the far corners, going under to a far corner when they go broody or don't feel well. Getting them out is a real pain if you have to crawl under.

Be sure to use something stronger than chicken wire for the run, window and vent covers. Critters like to rip chicken wire apart or pull sleeping birds through it bit by bit.

You have a really good start. :thumbsup

Thanks. I have a 13 y/o who has already started naming chickens, and we dont have any yet. But I'm sure he wont mind crawling under, I do plan to have access on the back 2 corners though, and plan to use 2x4 wire, was gonna use chicken wire for vents, but now I'm rethinking that. Planning to hang food and water underneath, so will have access. Run will be the other end of that shed, and about 15 ft out to the right of it, and about 8 ft wide all the way, that about right for 8_12 chickens?

First of all...

I don't know much about building coops but I know that you should make sure that the coop fits the insulation needs where you live and that if the floor is to be wood, keep the floor really clean or else mold and soft, squishy wood will appear, and last if you are to keep the flooring as just plain dirt, bury a layer of vermin-proof wire mesh under it. Wild animals can be smart when they want to taste an exotic, new, fat, juicy, fish in a barrel meal, keep them safe. Also never use cedar wood shavings, it is unhealthy for chickens and also think about making the coop easy to clean. :) Maybe trick your kid into cleaning the coop for you. 🤣

Actually insulation is not necessary in most locations....and can harbor vermin and pests.
But.....

Welcome to BYC! @Rbest
Always good to know.....
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!
