Coop Heater

Just a thought...
I have seen ceramic heat bulbs that work in the existing sockets used for the red and clear bulbs. Not sure on reliability.
Perhaps an oil heater? They do not get as hot and are a sealed unit rather like a radiant heater for old homes.
I have 2 just in case we get below 0 here and I am in Colorado.
I may not need it but feel better having them even if we do not get that cold.

The ceramic bulb style is lower down on the page.

Personally I feel safer with....

Hello CCx6, thanx for the suggestions, right now, I have a little Holmes Ceramic heater inside, as I am working on the inside of the coop. I have it truned down to the lowest setting, and it is keeping the coop at 35-40, with an outside temp of 20. I obviously cannot use this inside with birds and shavings, at least not on the floor, but I might try and make a cage mount for it, and clean it every week with air from compressor.
Last night a quart of water about 1/2 full froze solid in this insulated coop, it is empty and no heat source.
I am not keen on brooder lights, but may go with an oil filled rad heater., as you have mentioned.
Here is the coop 6ft X 8 ft X 6 ft ceiling.still getting things ready, no vents yet, gonna house 5 bantams in this coop, they are in my garage right now, with temps around 40....RR

Better to vac things out rather than try and blow them out. It can force gunk in deeper. Bad case they do not work worst case they cause a fire.
If you go with the oil heater you can build a small 2x6 into a platform to keep it off the floor and put wire around it to keep the hens off it. DH did that last year when we were -20 and it worked well for mine. It only lasted about a week but I certainly felt safer with it.
Basically he made a stand out of a 2x6 and set the heater on cinder blocks on top of it and added welded wire all the way around it.
The coop was about 20 degrees warmer than outside with it set on its lowest setting.
Cute coop by the way.
I would place it so that huge window is facing south for the winter sun and that would keep the summer sun off it as well.
With bantams I would just have one roost at about 30 inches off the floor.

That is my 4 cents worth lol (inflation and all).
