We need to put down more dirt for our chickens. We have rock and they scratch it away to get to the dirt below to dust themselves. We also were told this is good to help them stay cool and the help with mites.
We inherited them from a farmer her farm burnt down and a friend took them on for her and found new homes. Help!! New to the chicken game and loving it. We only have two and a small coop, soon to enlarge an area for them to have more space.

My run floor is all dirt.
They will dig holes to stay cool and to dust bathe for mites, lice, and to stay cool.
You could add more dirt to a corner of the run or even a bin of dirt. I have seen where some people fill an old tire with a combination of dirt with some sand (not play sand).

They need a safe place to go to at the end of every day with roost bars or a perch to get on

Got pics?
Are you just concerned about dust bathing at this time?
Probably need some bedding too, to help deal with the poop.

Oh, and... Welcome to BYC! @MoSteveMNorCal
I see you're in Nor Cal, which I assume is Northern California?....but....
Here's how to add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!
