Coop in a wind tunnel...prevailing wind help...

I'm a bit of a weather geek, definitely book marking that one!

Here's mine, I'm about in the middle of these on and east/west line.

Yeah, I like weather related stuff too...storms fascinate me. They're destructive...but fascinating. I just never paid any mind to our wind as it is always blowing...I got complacent...

The map is easier than trying to explain...I'm like 60 miles from anything notable in any direction. Lol. Far enough from the hustle bustle but close enough to not be completely isolated...I love being surrounded by farms...the Amish...with my mountains close by.

Never thought about the chicken dust thing...jeesh...I love this site. See...I love getting insight from veteran chicken peeps. I was going to keep that separation wall just studs covered with chicken wire. I like the concept of that Woods coop...but...when it is all said and done I will have crooked ideas from everyone.

You're what, about 75 miles northwest of Philly? Pretty easy, but the pic stuck in my mind for sure.

My coop is part of a large shed, the dust that collects on things not regularly touched is.just.insane! Many folks misinterpret the Woods concept. My coop shed looks like a woods, but it is not, right shape but wrong proportions. Not to mention the lack of an open front and presence of all 3 open eaves.

A storage area in the coop building is awesome(except for the dust part).
Nice to have all feed and supplies right there under one roof where the chooks can't get to them.
Especially nice during nasty weather and when health checks need to be preformed.
I actually have a chair and table in mine, very handy.

My coop is protected from all but the east side. Fence right behind it on the South and West sides, house (2 floors) on the North side and open to the East.

BUT, when snow comes it mostly gets blown in from the East on storms. not sure if it is because it whips around the house or not.

I just found a free plastic dog house that I cut a hole on the side so it will act as a Windbreak going into the coop.
Not really what you are looking for but just a thought if you want to block wind from going into the coop

I would build the coop the way you want to build it. Put your windows where you would prefer them to be. But on each window, make a shutter that will allow you to close it up in the winter.
You may just want to get a shudder that has the louvers (don't know if I spelled that right) so it will break off most of the wind, but still allow ventilation.
Or you can make a traditional window shudder, then on that window make a little window with a shudder that you can open. So you turn a 2 ft square windows into a 4 inch window.
Also you could put a attic fan with speed control in your coop, so in the winter you can close everything off and turn the fan on real low. Perhaps you could just drill a few holes in the shutters. Then you control how much ventilation that your coop has regardless of the wind.

I love all the ideas...(keep them coming!) many heads are so much better than one! I'm keeping a notebook with every idea you folks come up with as well as oodles of doodles. Omgosh...and am I reading...threads after threads....from years ago.

Ooooh....a chair and table...great idea! Medicine cabinet just popped into my head just now... Crazy how crap just creeps into the grey matter from out of nowhere...

Chair is great as I can sit down with bird on lap to examine, table holds gear I need, bands, meds, etc. I store 'meds' in the house, to keep in mild temps away from light.

Omgosh...and am I reading...threads after threads....from years ago.

I spent 6-9 months reading and planning before building coop and run. Have spreadsheet and Word doc to take notes. Used my cad program to draw out floor plans and elevations.

Excel........my "go to" for everything. lol I've heard the term CAD...know it's a design tool thingie...but not my area of expertise. I'm a huge fan of the graph paper and my trusty No. 2 pencil...with huge eraser.

I'm taking the entire winter to study...scribble...study some more...erase...ask questions...doodle...erase...lol Maybe take a Home Depot and/or Lowes weekend carpentry classes too!
