I was wondering if it made sense to build our coop in our pole barn, or it had to be outside for some reason. I want to cut down on the risk of predators as much as possible. Also, do you just make the chickens stay in the coop on rainy days etc? My husband and I work in town, 25 minutes away from our house, so we can't just go back and put them in the coop at the last minute.

Pole barns are quite commonly used for chicken coops. They make great shelter from the elements, and provide extra protection from predators. If you have an existing pole barn, I say go for it! I wish I had one!

A pole barn is a big long barn, ours is divided into two sections, 1/3 is a closed off 2 car garage, and the other 2/3 of the space is completely empty.

Just keep in mind that you will have chicken dander (dust) get over other stuff in the barn. My coop is inside my barn (not a pole barn, but still a barn!

). I'm going to need to install some air filters or something to keep my tools from getting too covered.

Some of my coops are inside the barn. I leave the sliding barn door open during the day for light and extra air flow and lock it up at night. I wish we had a few pole barns here also because that would really help but we rent so that's not going to happen. I can't think of any reason you can't build your coop in a pole barn.

oh cool thanks PouletsDeCajun (just sent you a pm btw)

that would make a great coop. I just got a book on raising poultry recomended by another BYC member and in it it talks about the benifits of a 3 sided coup for good air flow I wonder if you could build that with your pole barn. I wish I had one lol
