Coop is done...how tall to build chicken run for silkies

My husband finished converting a playhouse into our coop. Now we need to make the run. It is for silkies only. Its going to be a 4x4 run. I am wondering if i can make the run only 17 inches tall? Its about 17 inches to the bottom gray part of the coop. Too short? Also i am wondering if i should make it with 4x1s and put hardware cloth in between 2 4x1s?

As long as they can walk in it it doesn’t really matter. I like my run where I can walk in it.

If you plan to go in it, the question is not tall enough for them, its tall enough for you. You don't want to walk hunched over, or not be able to use a tool because the back end of the rake keeps hitting the "roof".

If you don't plan to go in it, the question is how you will access it for repairs, cleaning, filling food/water, etc.

Its a system, it needs to work together.

How many birds are going in here? Even for Silkies, 4x4 seems awfully tiny.
