Coop Issues and Question

I've only had my girls for a couple of months but have learned a lot from this place and just from keeping chickens in general.

One thing I've discovered is that the coop I purchased was not large enough or designed well enough.

Both roosts are in a poor position. One too close to a wall and one too high up. The coop is small and prevents them flapping their wings to get up to the higher roost so I've moved one roost down and the three of them roost on that.

Also the only ventilation is a window right next to the lower roost so that means the cold winter air would be right on them. I've covered it with perspex (something similar)

HONESTLY!!! The coop was advertised for 4 to 5 chickens. I've got 3 in there and wouldn't dream of putting another two in!

So...first time chicken keepers take these things into account when setting things up for your flock.

Sorry for the long post but:

I'm now looking at converting a children's playhouse and want to find a wooden one used. Wooden ones seem to be hard to find (used) so was wondering if the plastic ones would do and if they can be made to look nice with some paint. I'm concerned about plastic since I think they would be too hot in summer and too cold in winter.

Experienced chicken keepers....any thoughts?!?!

This is the coop from the back

Here is my latest picture of the run area. They have a thatched roof and flower boxes

That is really quite cute! but small, most coops premade hold at least half what they tout. You could add ventilation to that however.. have you thought about expanding it? I am no fan of plastic for housing, it sweats and is harder to control the humidity levels, all my buildings are done in wood.

Again my inclination would be a reno and utilize that existing coop and enlarge.

This is what started me thinking of a playhouse! The only drawback is the felting on the roof I think. And I'd have to make it predator proof. I was considering getting it with the porch base but sitting it with the large door on the back so I could use that to access the coop for cleaning. Then the auto chicken door could open onto the porch... Maybe I could change the roof!?!?

Would it be too big for just three hens? Do they like to be close together when they sleep? Course I could always use an excuse to get two more

no to the plastic.it is way to hot.My DH built our two coops out of wood.Go with wood and remember to add lots of ventilation.

You know, I think your comments here are just reaffirming my suspisions about plastic....I think if I can't find a decent play house in the next few weeks (used) I'll just splurge on the one in the photo. I understand what you said about the reno @Going Quackers but knowing me I'd botch that

I'll put it for sale online and get something back for it when I get the girls moved into new digs.
