My boyfriend and I are interested in getting a few chickens (ok I want chickens and he is just humoring me haha) we have a larger spot at the edge of our yard but it is taken over with pine trees, and we plan on cutting some down (mainly because they are dead) to make more room. And to allow some sun light. Is it ok to have chickens in an area with so many pine trees? I was worried about acidity and pine needles.... It may seem like a dumb question but I've never had chickens before and i want to get as much info before I get them :)

No problem with the pine needles. I have some pines along the driveway and the birds really enjoy digging through the needles to get at whatever is under them.

You can build your coop under pine trees. I'd cut the dead ones down before you build the coop. I'm not a fan of pine trees because I live where hurricanes come & the first tree that snaps & falls on houses are pines. I'm fortunate because I have 0 pine trees on the farm. You can even use the pine needles that constantly fall in your run in the winter to give the chickens something to scratch in.

Its actually a really good idea to have a coop under a pine tree. It gives them shade to sit in when its hot outside. Chickens like to be outside and if there is no shade, they can possibly overheat. And if they get bored, then they can dig though the pine needles.

Thanks! I will add a strong roof to the run to help prevent (or help prevent) any limbs falling. I'm glad they will enjoy the needles because we have MILLIONS! Lol
