Coop odor. Surprise!!!!!

It's clean and dry, and your birds look healthy- nicely done! Ours is doing well too despite a series of snow storms, brutal winds and cold, and hens having to be in.

I think its a combination of the kind of food they eat and using deep litter method. My DS mentioned one day that he was surprised that our coop doesn't smell because he can remember as a kid going to his grandparents and playing around their old coop and if you went in the building it still had a chicken poo smell. The interesting thing about that is it had been a number of years since my inlaws had kept chickens.

You are definately right about the food being part of it. I occasionally have to pick up a bag of layer from Rural King and it smells bad before it even goes through the chicken!

It has a fermented odor and I know it causes the droppings to smell worse.

I still to this day like the smell of a goat barn. Reminds me of being a kid. My husband thinks I'm crazy/weird/disgusting!
