Hi everybody,

My Cayuga ducklings grew out their brooder and are ready to move into the next home, a coop.
I found this little house on a local selling platform and tomorrow I’m going to collect it.
Needs some maintenance ofcourse but I like how it looks already.
This will only be for sleeping as the ducks will partly free range and a run has to be made as well from when I’m away :)

thought I start a thread here so you guys can give suggestions if you feel like it and follow my progress :) (And I can see mine ☺)

the mushrooms are not included in the sale, but for a small price I can have them too. Still thinking about that

So on Saturday I collected the house. In the end I didn’t take the mushrooms 🍄
In the afternoon we put it up in our garden, the shutters are removed because we did not like the feel of them. Since it was a childrens playhouse the windows could not be opened.

Today we did some work to make sure the house becomes duckproof..
1. The house in on hardwood raster, than a normal wood deckfloor. We will make a vinyl or other waterproof material bag which will fit into the coop in a way that when you need to clean it, you remove this bag, put it in a wheelbarrow and drive it to the dump place. Than you clean this bag in the river next to our house. Let it dry, put fresh bedding in it and voila 💪.
for now, since we first have To finish the coop we use a vinyl sheet. Not the best but it’s a try out of the ducks can get their mess higher or if this is high enough :)

2. since the windows couldn’t open we removed them and transformed them into open windows. Also the door is made a barndoor for ventilation.

up next is to find hard ware cloth which seems rather difficult to find for a good price At the moment. The cheapest looking stuff costs a fortune... so when I find it or a good alternative they move outside 🦆

maybe does not look like much but cost us a day to modify 😅

that is so adorable! Please don't take this as a criticism but that pretty red and white checkered cloth is going to have poop all over it!

I don't know how they do it but my 10 day old ducklings manage to poop about 12 inches up on the walls of their brooder!
Hi Donna, Yes I know... they poop loads. This is an old cloth i used as a waterproof layer for camping in the past. it’s from a kind of vinyl sheeting. So with a bit of water easy to clean!

Let us know how it works out.
Am guessing cleaning that sheet is going to get tiresome quickly.

goodafternoon aart :) would you be so kind to tell me why?

You use some kind of vinyl om the floor too right? There will be bedding on top! And since we have a lot of water around I’m going to make a removable “sac”. I hope it will make the cleaning more easy (and state of the floor more hygienic) than plain wood...

This:
We will make a vinyl or other waterproof material bag which will fit into the coop in a way that when you need to clean it, you remove this bag, put it in a wheelbarrow and drive it to the dump place. Than you clean this bag in the river next to our house.
Sounds incredibly laborious.
Will it even fit thru the door filled with bedding and poop?

Yes, but it stays in place and I never use water to 'clean' it.
I use wood shavings on the floor, with poop boards above-sifted daily, and change shavings out once or twice a year.
