Coop or not to coop... nope, the run is the question.

Their current run has a very large galvanized tub with dirt from their favorite dust bathing spots around the property. There are 2 natural branch roosts in addition to 3 widely spaced suet cake holders for ocassional treats, (I don't keep a constant supply of treats in them.) I would like to make their run larger and add some shrubbery and will do so in bits and pieces.

Really, don't worry about the poop. Look at your chickens, if they are bright eyed and active, your chickens are healthy and happy.

One winter, we had terrible weather for forever it seemed like. And when it finally got nice, the chickens were very timid about moving out.

Chickens hate change. But they are adaptable, and if they are safe, inside the run, well that is way better than dead outside.

Update, sort of: For the past three or four days, I've been letting them out in the afternoons after their typical egg laying time...I'm not about hunting eggs in the woods. I brought home a Dominque roo to look over them and the girls all seem pretty okay with that. He hasn't been with them long, so time will tell if he's a good rooster to them, but so far so good!
