Coop out of an old playhouse

Quote:
Hi momofdrew, the chickens love the horses and the horses watch over the chickens. I love having the coop so close to the horse pasture, surrounded on three sides, because the horses keep the predators away. *knock on wood*

That big horse in the background watches over the chickens. I think he finds them as amusing as I do.

Candle,
I like the pallet, too. Cheap and easy and it's not fastened, just resting, so I move it out of the way to clean under the roost twice a week. If it gets too funky, I can knock boards out of a new one and replace it.

Love it, love it, love it!!!

Question for ya...have you had any problem with them pecking the insulation? I was told if we left it exposed they would peck at it and eat it.

Your coop is sooo cute! Way to recycle! (It looks like your ladies love it, too!)

FrontPorchIndiana,
Now that you mention it... That's why we have two layers of insulation! They pecked and ate holes in the first layer. So we added a second layer to account for the holes and then we covered with the white shower board. There are still some areas that have the insulation exposed, but they have not bothered them. I keep an eye out and if I see any pecking, I just cut some more shower board. So far, the cabbage and other goodies have kept them occupied.

The cabbage freezes so I swap it out with a thawed one once a day. It was 10 F when the pictures were taken and the pullets were all fine with it. They ventured out on the porch but no further!

Hi! My pullets are just now getting mature enough to lay. Most of them still have wee pink combs and only three are "doing the squat". So no eggs yet. Those white objects in the nesting boxes are golf balls.

Thanks everyone for your very kind comments! I love how supportive this forum is!

Man I'm going blind. Not really I was on a different pc. And I was all excited for you. lol

oh my gosh this is so cute! Are you planning on building a run or simply allowing the girls to free range? BTW, your horse is lovely. I think it's funny that they look out for each other. I wish I lived in an area that I could have a horse.

I really like the use of the playhouse. Kid safe and chicken safe!!!
As far as suggestions...It looks like you have thought of everything.
It is neat and they even have a porch!!! I am green! Mine have to venture out into the snow. I have to shovel all the time to keep it clear enough for a stroll. hehehe! Nice job!
And WELCOME!!!!!!! I look forward to seeing you around!!

YOU HAVE A REALLY NICE COOP. I WAS THINKING OF USING 5GAL PAIL BUT I THOUGHT THAT MAYBE THE CHICKENS MIGHT SLIP ON THE PLASTIC AND STOP USING THEM. DID YOU NOTICE IF THAT WOULD BE A PROBLEM?

I use that kind of feeder but I was worried about the dust getting into the feed so I cut the bottom off a gallon milk jug and strung it through the rope. Now it sits on the top of the feeder, sort of like a funnel and keeps the feed clean. I don't think the girls know or care, but I feel better.
