I see coop plans advertised for example the DIY. Any recommendations? Or am I better to learn from the designs ideas on this site. I have a "vision" need the details on nest boxes, doors and speical feautres. Coop with run for 8-10 ducks allowing day time free "swim" on our pond, need (2) bird doors; run and pond. Shed roof with man door on the side.

Your thoughts, ideas and experience welcome.

Thanks,

First of all, I think the best approach is to research as thoroughly as possible. These pages are awesome, but other resources are available like DIY, the library, etc. There is even a forum for ducks specifically. Draw out your "vision" so that you may refer to it frequently and alter/amend it as you get more ideas and inspiration. Make sure you include all of the necessities a coop will need (i.e. vents, nests, doors, water/feed space, BIRD space, etc). ALWAYS have more space than you think you will need!! Think about non essentials like electricity, plumbing and any other amenity for you and the birds' comfort. In short... be PREPARED!!

That will be my advice if you want to build a custom coop. There are always the prefab coops of all sizes and shapes that will cost all kinds of prices, generally a lot more than what you will spend to make a nice coop. But that is a decision you must make. Personally I made the coops I have with free or cheap and recycled materials as best I could. I also relied on the help of others for labor. I hope yours comes out as you envisioned it!!

and finally...
