coop questions for a begginner

I am wanting to get dominickers thinking of starting with 4 hens but if I do good with them I may get a rooster as well I have just found this website and joined I have found a lot of helpful info but I have several questions as I have never built a thing in my life and cant afford to get the coop kits I know ventilation is very important but how do I know how much is enough and how much is to much?can I winterize the coop well enough to avoid using heat lamps in the winter? is there any kind of wood to avoid as I will be building the coop from scrap wood any kind of advise is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance
