hi i was just wondering if anyone could kindly give me some advice on whats best to use as a substrate in my run?

Currently the old run has just dry mud poached ground want it to look good and be easy to clean.. the run is not movable.

Hope you can give some ideas

Many thanks

Kelly

I use gravel in ours and then just hose it down when needed. It really takes car of the mud problem. You just have to make sure that the gravel has a place to drain to so you can hose it off.

Although I don't have this in my run (I have grass with muddy patches....) I would suggest putting sand in your run because then you could just rake the chicken poo out of it easily.

I have sand in mine but it is covered. I think if you use sand and it is not covered you might have an issue with water. I know that here in the NW it rains alot and I am in the process of making a exterior run and plan on using the dirt and pine needle mixture that is there now or throw down some mulch. My chickens love to dig through the mulch in the yard.
