Would hardware cloth work? Would that keep predators out?

we are WAY wetter here in Central TX. But, you get the same heat we do.

my suggestion is a hardware cloth skirt on the outside of the run. Mine has mulch over it to make it pretty.
Keeps the diggers out.

I have a chainlink dog run with 2x6's around the bottom. then it's filled with sand mixed with StalDry (DE and clay)

the girls LOVE it !!!!

they dust bath in it, eat it for grit. When it does rain, it dries FAST (my girls are spoiled and hate wet feet)
with the StallDry, we have no bugs and the girls are worm and mite free.

I will say, mine are more pet birds than chickens. We pick fresh grass for them and throw it in the run for them. Once they figured out the sound of the Lawn mower ment they get grass ... they go nuts when we pull the mower out.
