I am building a 6'x8' tool shed that will be modified and converted to a coop. Now because lay boxes won't be needed because they'll be broiler chickens, my question is How many could i get away with raising in the coop?

I will be making the shed coop very similar to this design.

With a lip at the front for sand.

What ever you are comfortable with. The more birds crammed in a tight area the higher risk for disease and behaviour problems(which I wouldn't worry too much about since they wont be in there long) A lot of people are going to give to the long list of why 4 square feet per bird is needed, but I would put 20 birds in there without any hesitation!

Arson, is it only confine or will they have a run too? Industry standard for corn x is 1 to 1.2 birds per square foot. Now here on the BYC forum people do treat the animals better and more humanily, so what you will hear is 4 sqft per bird. In my broiler coops there is on average 3.3 sqft per bird, but they do have access to 12 sqft of run per chicken all day. They are only confined at night.

So if you are KFC you would have about 75 chickens in that space, if you are a normal person, maybe 20 max.
