Coop Size vs. Chickens - 4 square foot rule?

The indoor space is more important to consider than the run space- especially if you let them out for a little free range. To make a crowded run more livable, add perch space and entertainment. Hanging cabbage or other greens for them to peck is usually a winner. It keeps them from pecking each other.

I wouldn't want to go over 2 dozen. for your setup. It's always better to have more room.

Thanks for all of the replies - I think I'll try splitting the difference between 2 dozen (24) and my 32 that I thought I could have, and shoot for around 28. They have fun stuff like a pool ladder in the run, and we give them treats every day (a little scratch, some green stuff). Feed storage is not a problem, water access is not a problem, and I believe I have GREAT ventilation. Nesting boxes don't take up any of the 8 x 16 space, those are sort of "built on". I will look into more perches/roosts for them to play on before I integrate any new birds. Poop scooping goes directly into a compost heap that is only a few yards from the coop door.

As far as breeds, I have the BO's, which are fairly heavy, but the EE are not really what I would call "heavy", so I think that gives me a little leeway on number. No New Jersey Giants for me!!!

I think my friend is already at her limit - she might not be able to add any more right now.

I forgot to say that the Blue/Black/Splash Orps seem to take up so much more space, kind of like the Jersey Giants! I have a quad in 28 sf, and they seem a bit cramped sometimes when they cannot go outside for the day. The size of the breed is definitely something to consider. For instance, my Blue Orp rooster's feet are about 5" from back toe to middle toe, huge! He must have at least a 4" surface to be comfortable, so we actually made a roost shelf with tough green plastic garden fencing as the seat for poop to fall through, about 21" off the floor. Big boy makes quite a BOOM! when he jumps down.
