Alright. I'll keep this short and sweet. How but should a coop be for 25 hens. Is 6x6 ok

I've heard it depends on size of birds and if they'll ever come out of the cage. I've heard 3-5 sq ft per hen if you let them out to exercise and 10 if you don't.

I'm NO expert, don't even have hens. Researching now... My question is do you need that particular space in the roost alone or in the run and the roost?

2 square feet per bird if they have a large run or free range during the day. 4 square feet per bird if they are going to be "cooped" up all day. :)

So I plan on having my (future) hens in their coop/run for most of the day and let them out for a few hours before sunset. I have two large dogs that I'm not going to try to keep in the yard with free roaming hens at the same time. So if I were to go with around 4 sq ft per hen would that be total with the run and roost or just the roost/nesting box area?

So can anyone answer for 6 hens, kept in the coop probably 18-20 hrs a day do I need the roost area to be 24 sq ft or the run and the coop total to be 24? I'm probably going to use more area than that, probably 8x6 but I want to make sure the girls hen house/roost is large enough.
