Coop Temps in the summer??????

Everytime i got in to fill up there feed or pet my chicks, the coop seems to be hotter than outside. i just put a fan in there today, but i do live in south florida and its 90+ everyday with high humidity. How is everyone elses coop temps?? To hot for the chickens?

I live in Ohio and it's been pretty hot here as well. I just open the windows and have a tarp over part of the run to give them some shade. They seem to be pretty happy with this set up.

We have a open coop in regular coop. Just open the front two doors and there is a wall of wire fence 3 feet in, with another door to the chickens. I open the doors, plus a ridge vent, two vent skylights (just a clear vent), and a window. It's very breezy in there when opened up.

freezine water bottles and putting them in the coop for the hens to lean on or sit on is a nice way for them to cool off a little.


How hot is to hot for a hen?

I live in Houston and my husband and I are worried about the same question.

We are finishing out the inside of the coop to include the ceiling. Yesterday was extremely hot... with a heat index, it felt like a 102+.

Although the coop was warm inside, it did feel cooler inside than outside. We have two big windows in front where the sun will hit mid-afternoon and a row of smaller windows that will be over to nesting boxes. We are also going to put some sort window shade that will double as door for winter conditions (like Houston has a winter) to help keep the direct sun from hitting the inside of the coop.

DH has put two electrical boxes to plug fans into that will sit in the two big front windows hoping that it will create a cross breeze from the back windows.

Our run is going to be 16x12 and we are going to put solar netting across the far end for shade during this time of the year.

With fall just around the corner, August being the turning point, we will know more next summer when it really gets hot.

Other than having plenty of water in shaded areas is about all you can do... I understand that they are pretty hardy and will be ok...

ours is an open design (we live in FL too and that bothered us when building)...girls get no privacy except in nesting boxes.....but very curious of how hot is TOO hot...

I am so happy we insulated the coop. It doesn't just help to keep it warmer in the winter, it's also much cooler out there even in severe heat! I'm always pleased to step in there when it's 98° outside to find it noticeably cooler - don't have a thermometer out there, but it's not too bad.

Our coop is in the shade. And that's a good thing when it's 115 outside.

Grateful for the weather forecast for this week. It shouldn't get above 106.

14 week old pullets are doing fine.

Chickens are OUTSIDE in their enclosed RUN area . I say enclosed , I mean they are NOT free ranging . Majority of the day , the whole area is shaded from large pecan trees.

The COOP is used only for laying during the day .

We have sides that 1/2 built with hinges to OPEN for proper ventilation .

Coop and Run are attached in one area . they go lay and come back out into the run area .



We have not completed painting the coop yet , BUT this is SO far what it looks like ... OUR run which is attached is 12 x32

WHOLE SIDE OPENS FOR CLEANING AND VENTILATION , BUT WE HAVE 1/2 on hinges .

This is another Coop and Run that is VERY simular to ours , except OURS has the Sides that I call wings that open up for ventilation on both sides .
