Coop Temps in the summer??????

Well, i have plenty of water available, and i have several windows. I just recently sheeted the whole thing and and cut windows in two of the four walls. i did this because now i have feather footed d'uccles which i plan on showing, so i want them in a dry area with bedding on the ground that cannot get wet. thats why i ended up sheeting in the two sides that were open. well that then made it alot hotter inside the coop. I checked my thermometer and it has a high and low. With the fans on for 24hrs from 12 a.m. to 12 p.m. it was a low of 74 and a high of 97 inside the coop. How is that? it was hotter before the fans. my babies look fine, what do yall think for the temps? thanks O, i also have two runs attached but there closed off right now because it rains every day and dont want there feet nasty, as well as there only 5 weeks old and i just moved them out there 2 days ago. thanks

Well , thank God DH decided to have hinged wings on both sides of the coop .
Infact , the roost area is really close to this OPEN area and they get alot of air and ventilation at night . Never have to use fans , even with temps in high 90's and heat index of over 100 ....

During the day , they ALL remain outside in the run area , UNLESS they enter the coop to lay .

They also have access to go UNDER the coop ( which is built about 2 - 3 ft. off the ground ) area is shaded and protected from heat and rainy days . COOP AND RUN are mostly in the shade thanks to building it NEAR huge pecan trees.

Our summers are traditionally pretty hot too, around 35C (I think that's around 95F or so) with very high humidity. In preparation for this summer, we built our coop with plenty of insulation (R14 all around, top and bottom). This has helped tremendously, plus we have a circulation fan that exhausts hot air from the ceiling to outside, and windows at the bottom of the coop to pull in cooler air. The hottest it's ever been in there is 29C (84F), but the humidity has been high (93%). Not sure what to do about that.

I've tried one of the other suggestions to put frozen water bottles in their coop, and they do sit on them when they need to. I also put frozen water bottles in with their water fount.

And finally, on the really super hot days, we tack up a tarp over the coop just to add even more cooling shade.

Bit by bit, it all helps. The books say their optimal temp is 21C (70F), and anything over 35C (95F) may kill them.

well i live in georgia it is hot here....i have an open wired in large pen with a dog house for them to go in which they do not.....it is under a big old oak tree so they get plenty of shade they seem to be doing fine....we have very mild winters here so i do not see a problem.....

We keep ours cool by insulating it well. It stays at least 10 degrees cooler than outside. When it gets past the hottest part of the day I open all doors and windows. ALthough I'm in WI and the hottest it's been here so far I think was 82 lol At night this week it's been getting down to 50 sometimes lower!

I would love 50's at night around here. Right now it's hanging in the 70's with high humidity at night

You people talking in the 50's and even 70's are making me PRAY for the fall and winter season to hurry .

We been having 96- 99º temps during the day with heat index between 105 - 110 ....

Ya'll think ya'll know what HUMIDITY is ? No , don't think so . I live in the DEEP SOUTH . LOUISIANA . Don't get any hotter than here and humidity is like stepping into an OVEN . You can NOT even SIT in the shade without gasping for air and sweat pouring . TRUST ME On this one , I have severe COPD , if anyone is suffering , its ME.

I don't know how you southerners take it. That's the main reason I'd never move south. These summers are bad enough, make it ten times worse and I'd just be miserable all the time! As I've said many times, you will never, ever hear me complain about the weather in January or February. Seriously! Which is, of course, why I insulated the coop, the birds have to have protection from our harsh winters. The added benefit of a cooler coop in the summer is great, too!
